Using a cafetiere, otherwise known as French Press, is a brilliant yet simple way to make a delicious cup of filter coffee. It’s an immersive brewing method and the same method used by the professionals to evaluate coffee (via cupping). If you like your coffee to have a lot of body, this method is for you.

Cafetiere
Measurements
Grind size | very coarse |
Coffee weight | for one cup/person use 12-15g |
Water | 200ml water per person |
Brew time | 5 mins |
Equipment | Cafetiere, Mugs, Scales, Timer, Spoon |
How to make it
- Pre-heat your cafetiere with boiling water, leave it for a min to heat up and then dispose of this water. This will make sure that your brewing temperature is stable allowing for a better extraction.
- Weigh and grind your coffee, you want this to be almost gritty so it doesn’t flow through the mess of the Cafetiere.
- Add your ground coffee into the cafetiere and pour in ⅓ of your hot water (remember you want off boiling around 94 degrees). Leave this to bloom for around 30 seconds and then add the rest of your water.
- Leave the coffee to brew for 4 minutes.
- Once brewed, break the crust of coffee formed on the top and stir. This doesn’t need to be super vigorous, just enough to sink the ‘crust’ of grounds on the top.
- Place the plunger on top and wait for your coffee to settle back down for a few seconds
- Plunge (the fun bit).
- Pour into your mugs and enjoy.
